Sunday 10th November 1600hrs at University sports complex Mgarr Ladies will face Rabat in what will be a very challenging game for our ladies in orange. Teamwork, will power and full on concentration and you’l bring this win back! Go ladies!
Three years ago, Mgarr Volleyball Club embarked on a journey that is proving to be rewarding. First, a Senior Male’s team was set up to compete in the National League. Almost all the players had no experience in the sport. Therefore, the task of contending highly experienced opponents was challenging. The experience of coach Silvio Camilleri and his intensive training sessions throughout the summer of 2010, were immediately effective. Opponents were taken by surprise as to how well prepared this new team was. Although the males didn’t manage to win the first nine matches, they won the last fixture of the season against Iklin. Since then, the Senior Male’s team has been motivated to improve its position in the MVA National League classification.
Last year, the club introduced a team to compete in the Senior Female Second Division. This was a big challenge both for the sixteen ladies who showed interest to play volleyball and for Coach Silvio Camilleri who had to teach the game techniques. As of May, training sessions started full swing to prepare the team for the league. The first round proved to be tough. However, these games provided the perfect opportunity for the team to better understand the game and identify areas to improve. Under the guidance of Camilleri, together with the players’ determination, the team acquired the necessary skills to give a good challenge and managed to win a number of games in the second and third rounds, placing fourth in the MVA Second Division League.
During the Gala Awards Night for the 2012/2013 season, Annalisa Agius and Clayton Portelli were awarded the Best Player award for the female and male team respectively whilst the Most Dedicated Player trophy was given to Lydia Muscat and Andrea Agius.
The Club organises various fund-raising activities to help with the ever-increasing expenses. In collaboration with Mgarr Local Council, the Club organised Beach Volley Tournaments at Gnejna Bay, opened to the public the underground Flour Mill in Tal-Palma, limits of M?arr and offered parking facilities during Festa Frawli.
The M?arr Volleyball Club Committee would like to publicly thank the M?arr Local Council, especially Mayor Paul Vella, Deputy Mayor Eman Vella and Councillor Clayton Gauci for their constant support, as well as the club’s sponsors: The Hatch Bar, Ballut Blocks Ltd, Framegrip Ltd, Caccu Social Club (Qormi), J&J Gauci Granite Ltd, Nectar Group, Nicky’s Butcher (Naxxar) and FrottArtna. Thanks to the financial aid of such sponsors, the Club can continue its journey and look to the future aiming to build on the present success story. A word of thanks goes to our helpers and supporters who assist the Club and whose presence during matches is greatly appreciated and highly encourages all our teams.
